Keep Los Angeles Beautiful, 2023
Collaborative artwork with FREEWAY
Vinyl Banner, contact adhesive
36 inches  x 48 inches

In 2007 Keep Los Angeles Beautiful (KLAB), a citywide volunteer-based program, was established to help create, maintain, and promote a litter free and “beautiful” City of Los Angeles. The program promotes the reduction of waste through various volunteer-based initiatives. The program runs in tandem with Keep America Beautiful, a nation-wide initiative with similar goals of “beautifying” and rebuilding “public spaces.”

The program encourages community members, non-profits, and even corporate sponsors to participate in environmental clean ups. Yet, the program does not identify Los Angeles’ complicity in polluting lower-class neighborhoods through its public and private infrastructure.

This banner is installed on the Figueroa Street Tunnel exit on the  I-110. The banner is coated with a contact adhesive that will collect air pollution coming from the freeway. “Keep Los Angeles Beautiful” functions as a reminder to consider why and where Los Angeles is permitted to be beautiful.
